The britannia bridge is decorated with four magnificent stone lions, one at each corner of the bridge, two on the Anglesey side and two on the mainland side. The four lions were sculptered in local Limestone by John Thomas. Unfortuanately the Lions cannot be seen from the A55 Dual Carriageway, only if you walk underneath the road bridge, near to where the railway section is.
To get to see the Britannia Lions on the Anglesey side, if travelling from the Menai bridge direction, take the first turning on the left, after the Britannia bridge slip off, which is sign posted for Carreg Bran Hotel. Travel down this road, if you look towards your left just before you go under the bridge you will see a muddy track with trees either side. Carry on under the railway bridge and park next to St. Mary's church. You will need to walk back up the hill, under the railway bridge, turn right, and round the metal gate.
Walk along the muddy path, in a South Westerly direction for approximately 200 yards and you will see a rough ramp or slope to your right, walk up here and you will be able to see the lions on either side.
If you walk along the Anglesey Coastal Path along the Menai Strait from the Menai Bridge direction, when you arrive in front of the mighty Britannia bridge, follow the path up the steep hill to the right, when you get to the top of the hill and bear left up another hill (you are now directly under the road bridge) and you will see the lions either side of the bridge.
You can walk to Treborth Botanical Gardens, and take the path on the right that is just after the long stretch of trees, follow the coastal path which runs parallel with the Menai Strait, after almost a mile you come to the Britannia bridge and you will be able to see both lions there (also amazing views of the island in middle of Menai Strait - Ynys Gorad Goch)
If you drive down through Treborth village towards the vets and park tidily and walk down the path in a Northerly direction towards the Menai Strait, you will start to decend downhill towards the Britannia bridge
If you follow the path to the left of the bridge you will also see one of the old box sections, where the trains used to travel through (this is part of the original Tubular bridge before it caught fire).
