Welcome to our campaign to "Raise the Britannia Lions". The Britannia bridge which crosses the Menai Strait, from the North Wales mainland to the beautiful Isle of Anglesey is decorated with 4 large stone lions sculptured out of limestone, two on the mainland side and two on the Anglesey side.

The idea is to try and raise the two lions on the mainland side so they can greet the thousands of people who come onto the Isle of Anglesey (Ynys Mon) via the A55 Dual carriageway, the two remaining lions on the Anglesey side are quite close to the Anglesey coastal path and would be nice for people to see.

Unfortuanatly these magnificent statues are out of sight when you cross the Britannia bridge on the A55. The only way to see these beautiful lions is to either walk down past the Carreg Bran Hotel in Llanfair PG on the Anglesey side or or to walk down an even longer path on the mainland side, even then, there is restricted access to the lions.

Wouldn't it be a magnificent sight to be greeted by two of them as you cross the Britannia bridge onto Anglesey?

This campaign is to raise awareness of these magnificent stone Lions and to initially gauge support from the many people who live locally and visit Anglesey about raising the Lions. For many years there has already been a desire to be able to see them from the A55 Dual Carriageway. Support would be collected via an online petition and signatures collected by the various supporters.

Once enough support has been raised, the aim is to approach Network Rail, Ynys Mon, Gwynedd County Council and Cadw with a view to exploring the chance of raising two of the Britannia Lions on the mainland side to welcome people as they drive over the A55 on to Anglesey.

We have had some great comments on the i Petition page, one question that is raised on a regular basis, is that about lifting the Lions, the lions are constructed of 11 pieces of stone, if they can float the original box girder tubes into position and lift them up that high, then I'm sure the lions can be raised!
